What it is

We were taught to take things apart.

Break the problem into pieces. Fix each piece. But the world isn't made of pieces — it's made of relationships. Loops that feed back. Delays that hide cause from effect. Wholes that behave in ways no part can explain. Systems thinking is the discipline of seeing that web — and learning to move within it wisely.

Reinforcing loops amplify; balancing loops stabilize. Every system is a dance of the two — and behavior follows the loops, not the parts.

The highest leverage

Our hardest problems are systems problems.

Climate. Polarization. Inequality. Misinformation. Coordination failure. None of these yield to linear thinking — they're wicked problems, woven from feedback loops, delays, and competing goals. You cannot fix them part by part. You can only see the structure and find the leverage.

So the highest-leverage solution to the world's toughest challenges may not be any single fix. It may be raising a generation that can think in systems — because every practitioner we grow becomes a mind that can see the whole, and move it well. The mindset spreads. The paradigm shifts. That is how systems change.
